Massy

The promotion that mattered most came in 2022, when Massy won the Nationale championship, beating Soyaux Angoulême in the final and going up to Pro D2. It was the club's second climb into that division in a decade: ten years earlier, in 2011–12, a Fédérale 1 final defeat to Colomiers had still carried them up on points, and in 2017 they went up again after topping the Fédérale 1 Poule d'Accession. None of those spells at the higher level lasted long, and each time the club came back to rebuild.

Massy split off from the multi-sport club MAS in June 1971 and took the name Rugby Club Massicois; the sky blue and black it still wears came from the city's coat of arms that same year, replacing an earlier yellow and blue. The club turned professional in August 2004, becoming Rugby Club Massy Essonne, and picked up the French Rugby Federation's "Club Engagé" label along with recognised training-centre status in 2007. That status shows in the honours list more than in the first team's league position: youth sides have taken the Super Challenge de France U15 four times, most recently in 2022, and the Cadets title twice.

What Massy is known for beyond its own results is who passes through it. Alongside Stade Français and Racing 92, it counts as one of the three clubs that keep Île-de-France rugby stocked with players, and its academy has sent a long line of them into the Top 14 and the France squad. Mathieu Bastareaud came up through Massy before his career took him to Toulon and the national team, one of the clearest examples of what the club is built to do: develop players it cannot always keep, at a ground, the Stade Jules-Ladoumègue, that holds barely 3,200 people to watch them go.
