Rennes Étudiants Club spent the 2022 final chasing promotion out of Fédérale 1. It got there by beating RC Hyères 15–11.

The club took its name from its founders, students in Rennes who set it up in 1961, and it has kept the identity through the decades in black and white. Its home, the Stade du Commandant Bougouin, also known locally as the Stade vélodrome, holds 5,000 people.

Gaël Dréan came through the club as a winger before leaving for RC Toulon in 2022. Carlos Muzzio arrived by the opposite route, an Argentine prop who joined REC after a career at Stade Montois, adding a different kind of experience to the pack.

For now, REC's task is simply to hold the level it has just fought twice to reach.
