Munchen

Rugby union arrived late to Bavaria's football-obsessed capital, and when a group of enthusiasts set up a club to play it in 1977, there was no established local scene to join — Munich already had one rugby side in StuSta, and the newcomers built their own fixtures, ground and following from nothing. Home games settled at the Bezirkssportanlage am Hedernfeld, a 2,000-capacity venue on Ludwig-Hunger-Straße that has stayed the club's base ever since.

MRFC found its early identity under Rory Donoghue, who coached the side for nineteen years from 1990 and delivered the South German Championship in 1991, a title the club retained three years later. The step up to the top flight never followed: MRFC has taken the 2nd Rugby-Bundesliga three times, in 2002, 2016 and 2022, each promotion campaign to date matched by a return to the second tier rather than a run in the 1. Bundesliga.

Helmut Kraiger, capped by Austria, holds the club's records for Bundesliga appearances and points, a two-decade body of work that still frames how the current squad is measured. Yvonne Schwarzkopf became the first player from the club to win a German cap, a marker the men's side has yet to produce for itself. Youth rugby runs through U16 and U18 sides in Bundesliga competition, feeding a first team that continues to meet StuSta in the Munich derby.

What the club has not managed is a German Rugby Championship or a DRV Cup — the second division has proved a ceiling three times over, not yet a springboard.
