Newman come into the current URBA Top 12 campaign as champions. The final was played in 2025, when it lost its only previous appearance in the decider to Hindú Club; this time Newman beat San Isidro Club 15–3.

The club grew out of the Cardenal Newman School in Benavídez, where alumni formed the side in 1979. Its colours, burgundy and green, were chosen by Brother Ignatius Doorley of the Christian Brothers with a nod to Iona University College in New York, and the nickname Los Cardenales followed from them. The home ground, Estadio Brother Timothy O'Brien, carries the name of one of the club's founding brothers and has been used by the Pumas for training.

On the national stage, Newman's record runs deeper than its Buenos Aires breakthrough.

Off the pitch, the club is remembered too as the place where Mauricio Macri played rugby in his youth, before he became president of Argentina.
