Belgrano

Belgrano's oldest quarrel is with Asociación Alumni, and the meeting between them still carries the name El Clásico decades after both clubs stopped being the forces they once were in Argentine rugby. Belgrano grew into that rivalry early: it was one of the four founding clubs of the Argentine Rugby Union in 1899, and its rugby side went on to become the identity by which the wider athletic club is known, even though the same badge once carried a footballing record good enough for three national titles before the code split away from the sport that made it famous.

The ground at the corner of Virrey del Pino and Superí streets, bought in 1902, still goes by the name of that intersection among the club's own supporters, and the wooden stands raised there in 1907 gave way three years later to the "Donald Forrester" grandstand, a name the ground has never shed. Eleven Top 12 titles have been won since 1907, but the gap between the tenth and the eleventh ran to 48 years, and when it finally closed in 2016, with a 25-10 win over Hindú Club in the final, it closed a wait that had outlasted most of the players on the field that day.

The club's brown hoops, chocolate rather than plain brown by the description its own members use, have been worn by Lisandro Arbizu, who captained Los Pumas younger than anyone else has managed, and the name of Alberto "Cabo" Camardón is still spoken of as the coach who shaped much of what the club won in the middle of the twentieth century. For all that, a ground holding only 500 has kept Belgrano a club spoken of in Argentine rugby history rather than one that competes for the biggest occasions in it now.
