Alumni

Pablo Matera came up through the Alumni academy before he ever wore the Pumas jersey. Sebastián Salvat did something similar a generation earlier, leading Argentina at the 1995 World Cup after learning the game on the club's own pitches.

Daniel Ginhson, an Englishman who taught at the Buenos Aires English High School, founded the present-day Alumni in December 1951, having secured permission from surviving members of the old Alumni Athletic Club — the football side that Alexander Watson Hutton had directed and that dominated the domestic game before folding around 1911. Ginhson borrowed the name and the colours, red and white, but set them in horizontal rather than vertical stripes. For its first decade the club trained wherever it could, including a spell in Marcos Paz, before settling on its own land in Tortuguitas in 1961.

Four titles running from 1989 to 1992 — a tetracampeonato in the local shorthand — built the club's name in the URBA Top 12, and a national club championship followed in 2002 against Jockey Club de Rosario.
