The night that matters most on the calendar still belongs to Sheffield. Panthers supporters call the meeting with the Steelers the biggest derby in British ice hockey, and neither side lets the other forget a bad result.
Hockey in the city goes back to an attempt in 1939 that the war shut down before it started. The team that eventually took the ice did so on 22 November 1946, beating the Wembley Monarchs, and kept going until the British National League folded in 1960. They opened with a 7–4 win over the Solihull Barons in September 1980.
The championship that carries the most weight domestically is the EIHL title from 2014–15, backed by six British Championship play-off wins across the league era. In 2017 Nottingham became the first British club to win the IIHF Continental Cup, a result that still separates them from Cardiff in that particular argument.
