In 2023 the club reached the NWSL Challenge Cup final and fell to North Carolina Courage, 0-2.

That history began on 22 October 2019, when the ownership group behind USL side Louisville City FC, operating as Soccer Holdings, LLC, secured an NWSL expansion franchise. On 8 July 2020 it unveiled Racing Louisville FC instead, along with a crest and a palette built around lavender and midnight violet, with mint and black as accents. Fans and the press settled on Racing Lou as shorthand; the club has never adopted a formal nickname of its own.

Bev Yanez has managed the side since November 2023. The run ended in the quarter-final, where they lost to Washington Spirit on penalties.
