A group of young men from Cerrito de la Victoria came to name the club they had put together, and Emilio Pronzolino suggested Rentistas. The name stuck from 26 March 1933.

For most of the years that followed, the club played in the divisions below the top flight, winning the Extra division three times in the 1950s and 60s and the Segunda División in 1971, 1988, 1996 and again in 2010/11. Then came 2020. Under Alejandro Capuccio, Rentistas won the Apertura, with Gonzalo Vega scoring the goal that settled the final against Nacional. The club finished the season as runners-up in the Uruguayan championship.

The 2020 squad also carried a name that has since travelled further than the club: Ronald Araújo, handed his debut in 2016, played for Rentistas again in 2020 before joining Barcelona.

Home is the Complejo Rentistas on Avenida Pedro de Mendoza, opened on 2 August 1998, a ground of roughly 6,500. The shirt is red, the shorts white, and the nickname that outlasted the others — El Bicho Colorado, the Red Bug — comes from the same colour.

The fixture that matters most is not a title decider. Rentistas share Cerrito de la Victoria with CS Cerrito, and the meeting between them is known as the Clásico del Cerrito: two clubs from one hillside neighbourhood, playing for the streets between them. The table goes out of the window in these games.
