Çaykur Rizespor spent last season in the Süper Lig and go into this campaign with the aim that has defined most of their recent history. The club's best finish in the top flight remains 11th, back in 2018–19.

The name on the shirt today dates to 9 February 1991, when the club entered into partnership with the state tea company Çaykur and became Çaykur Rizespor Kulübü. Before that, a 1968 merger with other clubs from the city had already reshaped the side, though it kept playing under the old Rizespor name for another two decades.

Promotion has been the club's recurring currency rather than cups. In 1978–79, Rizespor won the TFF 2. Lig. Domestic cup runs have gone as far as the semi-final, including a defeat to Galatasaray in 2015–16.

Ilhan Palut has been among the coaches most associated with the club's better spells, alongside Bülent Uygun.

The fixture that sharpens attention more than any other is the Karadeniz derbisi, against Trabzonspor.
