That name existed only a few months by then. In September 2020 the Malatjie family bought the second-tier licence from Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC, and on 5 November 2020 relaunched the side as Sekhukhune United. The nickname followed the same logic: Babina Noko, "children of the porcupine" in Sepedi, refers to the totem animal of the Bapedi people the club represents.

Home matches are played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, which holds 41,733 for football. In 2022/23, under coach Brandon Truter, the club reached the final of the Nedbank Cup and lost there to Orlando Pirates. Matches against Polokwane City, Marumo Gallants and Magesi FC are known locally as the Limpopo Derby.

The squad has leaned on Mamelodi Sundowns' surplus — Teboho Mokoena and Sipho Mbule both arrived on loan from there — while goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangaré added Ivory Coast international experience between the sticks. Cedric Kaze took over as head coach in 2026, succeeding Eric Tinkler.
