Liam Kirk came up through the Steelers' own academy and left it as the first player born and trained in England to be drafted into the NHL — a line that runs straight back to the ice at what is now the Utilita Arena Sheffield, built in 1991 for a club created to bring top-flight hockey back to the city.
The Steelers have not stopped winning since. Six Elite Ice Hockey League titles, stretching from 2003–04 to 2023–24, sit alongside earlier championships in the British Hockey League and the Ice Hockey Superleague, making them the most decorated club English ice hockey has produced. The 2023–24 season alone brought the league, the playoff title and the Challenge Cup together.
Continental competition has been less kind: a third-place finish in the IIHF Continental Cup in 2017–18 is as close as the club has come to a European trophy.
Domestically, nothing sharpens the calendar like Nottingham Panthers away, the M1 Derby that both sets of supporters treat as the fixture of the season, with the Pennines Derby against Manchester Storm running it close. The colours have stayed orange, black and white throughout, a direct nod to the steel that gave the club its name and Sheffield its old title as the Steel City.
Long before Kirk's draft night, the shirt belonged to players like Tony Hand.
