The Skaraborg derby against Skövde HF has followed Skara HF since its return to the top flight.

Skara HF itself came together on 8 April 1993, when the handball sections of Hangelösa HF and Stenums IF merged into a single club. The team dropped out of the top division after the 1997/1998 season.

The deciding fourth match went to overtime, and Skara won it 31–28. Goalkeeper Isabella Mouratidou was named goalkeeper of the year for that season, while Melanie Felber, the squad's top scorer, made the All-Star team as left back. Rasmus Overby coached the side to the title.

The club plays as "det lila gänget" — the purple gang — a nickname that matches the violet and white it wears. Petra Skogsberg, once part of the Swedish national team, returned to her parent club in 2013 as a player-assistant coach alongside her sisters Mikaela and Gabriella, a family thread running through a squad that has also included Finnish and Icelandic internationals over the years.

None of that changes what still sets the calendar in Skaraborg.
