Kansas City sits on a state line, and the football club sits on the Kansas side of it — in Kansas City, Kansas. That geography matters more than it sounds. When the ground on Village West opened, it anchored a stretch of the Wyandotte County suburbs that had been built up around retail and racing rather than sport, and it gave a team that had spent years playing in a converted American football stadium something scaled to the game: 18,467 seats, all of them close.

The club came out of Lamar Hunt's office. Hunt founded it on 6 June 1995 as Kansas City Wiz. The name lasted a year before it became Wizards, and the nickname stuck long after the branding did not — in 2010 the club dropped it entirely for Sporting Kansas City, a European construction that read as an odd fit in Kansas until the trophies started arriving again.

The season worth talking about is 2000. Kansas City took the Supporters' Shield and the MLS Cup in the same year, the only time the club has managed the double, and the only Shield in its record. Thirteen years passed before the second MLS Cup, in 2013.

Since then the club's currency has been the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the competition named for the man who founded it — won in 2004, 2012, 2015 and 2017, a run no other side matched in that stretch. It is a knockout trophy, and it rewards a squad that turns up for six games a year rather than thirty-four.

Which leaves the gap plainly marked. The Shield has not come back to Kansas City since 2000, and a league title has not since 2013.
