Tianjin Teda

The ground on the eastern edge of Tianjin carries the name of the company that once paid for the football: TEDA Football Stadium, built for a club that had just been bought and rebuilt. That purchase came in 1998, when the TEDA Group took over the city team and turned it into a professional operation under a corporate name that stuck for twenty-two years.

What the company bought was not new. A North China football side had been assembled in 1951; five years later it was reorganised as Tianjin's own team, and the line runs unbroken from there to the club that plays at the stadium today.

The best of it arrived in two seasons. In 2010 the team finished second in the Chinese Super League, behind Shandong Luneng. The following year it beat the same opponent 2-1 in the final of the Chinese FA Cup. That cup carried it into the AFC Champions League, where it came second in its group and then lost 3-0 to Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the round of 16. The return in 2012 was shorter: last in the group, out before spring was over.

The fixture that fills the ground has nothing to do with trophies. Beijing Guoan come down from the capital for the Jing-Jin derby.

The corporate era ended by decree. In January 2021 the Chinese Football Association ordered company names off club badges, and Tianjin Teda became Tianjin Jinmen Tiger. The TEDA brand company was wound up in December 2024; the club plays on, the stadium keeps the old name.

The league title has never come. Second place in 2010 remains the closest the club has been, and no run in Asia has gone further than that night against Jeonbuk.
