Torpedo Kutaisi began in 1946 as the works team of the local car factory, and the name has mostly held since, surviving a 1959 merger with Lokomotivi and a stretch in the early 1990s when the club dropped the industrial tag and played simply as Kutaisi. It reverted once Georgia's league found its footing.

The 2018/19 Europa League run stood out: Torpedo eliminated Qarabag of Azerbaijan and Cyprus's Anorthosis in qualifying before Ludogorets shut the door in the play-off. More recent Conference League trips have been shorter — Sarajevo ended the 2023/24 campaign in the first round, and Omonia beat Torpedo 4-0 the following season.
