VfL Oldenburg Women

The Greens have never claimed the German championship, and that absence has shaped how Oldenburg talks about itself in handball.

The habit goes back to 1981, when the club beat Holstein Kiel for its first DHB-Pokal, and it resurfaced twice under a run of finals nobody outside Oldenburg expected: 2009 against 1. FC Nürnberg, 2012 against Bayer Leverkusen, 2018 against SG BBM Bietigheim. That 2009 cup arrived alongside the DHB-Supercup, and a European title followed the year before it, the EHF Challenge Cup in 2008 — proof the club could do it outside Germany as well as inside.

Handball at VfL Oldenburg dates to 1922, decades after the parent club's founding as TV Jahn Oldenburg, but the women's side only took its current shape in the 1971/72 season under coach Robert Schumann, whose work carried the team into the Bundesliga in 1980. Toni-Luisa Reinemann is the name attached to the club now: an academy graduate who went on to lead the league in scoring in 2023/24.

Home games run through the Kleine EWE Arena, 2,300 seats that fill for the Nord-Derby against Buxtehuder SV. With Jenny Behrend back in green after her return in 2025, the immediate task stays the same one the club has built its identity around.
