Buxtehuder SV Women

Buxtehude sits west of Hamburg, a small Lower Saxony town. The handball club took that story for its own nickname, "Has' und Igel", and it stuck harder than any of the results the club has produced since — Buxtehuder SV Women have spent nearly four decades in a league they have never won.

The women's section did not grow out of the town's football club or a school team; it was started in the summer of 1976 by Hans Dornbusch, who coached the men's side at the time and pulled together young players from Buxtehude and neighbouring Beckdorf. They began in the sixth tier, the 3rd Hamburg Division, and climbed fast enough to reach the Bundesliga Frauen for the 1989/90 season. They have not left it since.

That first Bundesliga season also produced the shape of the club's whole history in miniature: runners-up, beaten by TV Lützellinden. It happened again in 1995/96, in 2002/03, and three times running against Thüringer HC between 2011 and 2015 — six silver medals, no title. The DHB-Pokal is where the frustration broke: Buxtehude won the cup in 2014/15 against SG BBM Bietigheim and defended it the following year past TuS Metzingen, 24:23. In Europe they had already announced themselves earlier, taking the first-ever Euro-City-Cup in 1994 and, well over a decade later, the EHF Challenge Cup in 2010 against Frisch Auf Göppingen.

Stefanie Melbeck built her career here, over 270 Bundesliga appearances, and was named German Handballer of the Year in 2010 while still wearing the blue and yellow. Home games are played at what locals call Halle Nord, or Hölle Nord — Hell Nord — a nod nobody at the club ever bothered to explain away, since visiting teams tend to work it out for themselves. Oldenburg, the nearest rival of any size, provides the fixture known as the Nord-Derby. The old hall's 1,300 seats were due to give way to a larger one for the 2025/26 season, a rare bit of expansion for a club whose ambitions have mostly been measured in near misses.
