Two students from a local college pulled a rugby club together at Vienne in 1899, in a town whose economy ran on cloth mills — hence the nickname that stuck, Les Drapiers, the Clothiers. The date matters less than what came after: by the 1920s and 1930s the club had climbed to the top of the French game, taking the second-division title in both 1927 and 1928, then in 1937 beating AS Montferrand 13–7 at the Stade des Ponts Jumeaux in Toulouse for the national championship — the first title won by any club from the Isère department.

That side was built around the player-coach Jean Etcheberry. Vienne reached the semi-finals three more times before the war, in 1935, 1948 and 1949, but the textile industry that had named the club went into decline through the 1970s, 80s and 90s, and Vienne went down with it. It took until 2012 for another trophy, the Fédérale 2 title after extra time against US Saint-Sulpice-sur-Lèze, and until 2023 for a return to real contention: runners-up in Nationale 2, beaten 39–20 by CA Périgueux in the final at Vichy, a defeat that still carried them up to the third tier.

The derby that matters locally is against CS Bourgoin-Jallieu, close enough in miles that the fixture is simply called the Derby de Nationale, and sharp enough that a January 2024 dispute over shirt colours and post-match remarks from the Bourgoin-Jallieu camp is still talked about on the touchline.

Of the players who came through, one crossed into a different kind of history: Georges Brun played in the France side that won at Twickenham in 1951.
