The Maidan, Kolkata's green expanse at the heart of the city, is dotted with the tents of local clubs. Calcutta Customs took its name instead from the office that built it: the club has belonged to Kolkata Customs since 1892.

Customs reached the final of the IFA Shield four times and lost every one. The first defeat came in 1908, the last in 1939. The nearest the club came to the Calcutta Premier Division title was 2019, when Customs reached the final and were beaten by Peerless SC.

The Manik Upadhayay Memorial Trophy arrived in 2022, the Naihati Gold Cup the year after, and a runners-up finish in the Sikkim Gold Cup in 2017. When the Indian Football Association merged its A and B divisions in 2023, Customs were placed in Group II of the restructured league.
