Match report

Wattenst hold on for a draw after late penalty

Wattenst 2:2 with Hartberg in the Austrian Bundesliga on Saturday. Oliver Lukic opened the scoring for the visitors in the 14th minute, and Marco Hoffmann doubled their advantage before half-time. The hosts were pegged back by Lukas Hinterseer's goal in the 72nd minute, and Murat Satin converted a penalty in stoppage time to salvage a point.

By then, the game had already settled into a certain rhythm. The hosts dominated possession at 66 per cent and created three big chances, yet they could not find the winner. Hartberg, sitting deep and soaking it up, took their chances when they came. The penalty incident went to review before Satin stepped up — and here's the thing, it was a fairly straightforward call once the decision was made.

The substitutions told their own story. Wattenst brought on Nikolai Baden Frederiksen and M. Olakigbe together in the 62nd minute, while Hartberg responded with Youba Diarra. Marco Hoffmann was taken off in the 73rd minute after his goal, and Thomas Goiginger came on for the hosts shortly after. The final changes saw Paul Komposch, Fabian Wilfinger, and Marc Striednig all enter the fray.

The statistics paint a picture of a match where territory meant little. Wattenst registered 93 attacks compared to Hartberg's 35, and their shot accuracy sat at just 44 per cent despite seven shots on target. Hartberg, by contrast, converted 80 per cent of their efforts into four shots on goal. They played the second half a man up in spirit, if not in numbers.

For Wattenst, the draw keeps them fifth with eight points from six games. They had looked solid in recent weeks, winning four of their last five before the 0:3 defeat to RB Salzburg. Hartberg remain sixth with seven points, and this result ends their clean-sheet run. We had tipped a victory for the visitors at 41 per cent confidence, but the game went another way entirely.

The result means neither side moves into the top four, and the gap between fifth and sixth stays at a single point. Wattenst will take comfort from their attacking output, though many shots with one goal means chances went begging. Hartberg showed they can grind out results away from home when the moments count.
