Coastal Union

In November 2022, Coastal Union reached the final of the Tanzania FA Cup and lost to Young Africans on penalties — the closest the club from Tanga has come to a major honour since the 1980s. That defeat sits oddly against a record that stretches back to 1948, when the club was founded, and includes two Nyerere Cup titles, in 1980 and 1988.

Tanga itself explains much of the club's identity: a port town on the Indian Ocean coast, closer in spirit to Mombasa than to Dar es Salaam, and Coastal Union has functioned for decades as its principal football export. Before the Nyerere Cup wins, the club had already collected a run of regional trophies particular to the town — the Nargis Cup in 1950, the Healtho Cup in 1957, the Mwafrika Cup in 1958 — the kind of silverware that mattered locally long before Tanzania's football pyramid took its current shape.

The club plays in red and white at the Mkwakwani Stadium, a 10,000-capacity ground that has never needed expanding to keep pace with the team's ambitions. The nearest Coastal Union came to a league title was in 1982, when it finished as runner-up in the Tanzania Major League, and the Ofuma Cup win of 1976 sits between that spell and the earlier run of regional cups as the last piece of silverware before a long gap.

That gap is the shape of the club's recent history: from 1988 until the 2022 cup final, Coastal Union went without a national title, and the loss to Young Africans has not been reversed. A league championship has eluded the club entirely.
