Gunnar Woebke did not build the Skyliners from scratch in Frankfurt; he moved them there in 1999, relocating the franchise from Bad Honnef's TV Tatami Rhöndorf into the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL). The name has shifted with the sponsor ever since — Opel, then Deutsche Bank, then Fraport, then back to plain Skyliners Frankfurt in 2024 — but the "Mainhattan Giganten" nickname has stuck through all of it.

The best of it came early. Gordon Herbert took the club to the BBL Championship in 2004, beating GHP Bamberg 3–2 in the series. The German Cup went the same way — won once, in 2000 against Alba Berlin, and lost twice more. Pascal Roller, at the club from 1999 to 2011, is the name attached to that whole stretch, and Quantez Robertson's number 23 hangs retired.

Frankfurt did find a European run worth keeping: the FIBA Europe Cup in 2016, sealed with a 66–62 win over Pallacanestro Varese, followed by a run to the final of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup, where Real Madrid proved too much.

The club's finances have not matched its trophy cabinet. Off the court, the club is still looking for stability: Yannick Binas left the management in 2024, and Sebastian Gleim only took over as sports director in August 2025.
