Jena went back up to the Basketball Bundesliga for 2024/25 under the name Science City Jena, the identity the club had carried before a spell as Medipolis SC Jena.

The first of those trips to the top flight followed a Pro A title win, and the second, in 2016, was managed by Björn Harmsen. Relegation followed each time, after the 2007/08 season and again after 2018/19, and the club has never lifted the Bundesliga championship or the German Cup.

Its history runs further back than the modern name suggests. The basketball section split off from TuS Jena in the 1990s, but the line stretches to HSG Uni Jena, a founding member of the East German Oberliga in 1953.
