Sabinov

Sabinov is a small town in eastern Slovakia, and for decades its winter identity has run through a rink on Levočská Street rather than through any run of silverware. The club there has never claimed a national title, and it has carried that fact through nearly eight decades and half a dozen names without ever quite becoming a big name itself.

It started in 1948, when Eduard Ondáš took the presidency and Ján Seman the secretary's post, and the first match went 9:2 over TJ Bardejov. What followed was less a hockey history than a small chronicle of Slovak political life: within two years the team was skating as ŠK Slávia Sabinov, and over the following decades it passed through TJ Sokol, TJ Slavoj, TJ Družstevník, TJ Slovan, a military-sponsored VTJ MHK, and a city-run MHK, before settling on HK Sabinov. The club dropped out of senior competition at some point and only returned to the second tier in the 2005/06 season.

Its best modern run came in 2015/16, when the side finished second in the regular season of the third tier and reached the national semi-finals — as close as Sabinov has come to real silverware in the years covered here. Anton Goffa remains the name attached to the scoresheet: 349 points in 258 games, still the club's leading scorer, while Michal Triscik simply outlasted everyone, dressing for a club-record 317 matches.

None of it has ever mattered more locally than the games against HC Prešov, the derby that empties Sabinov's small stands the way no league table ever could. The rink itself holds only 1,000 people, rebuilt in 2017, which is roughly the whole town turning up at once.
