FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup operated as the second tier of international volleyball, sitting directly beneath the Volleyball Nations League. The tournament served as a promotion mechanism, where the winner earned the right to compete in the following year's VNL. It was originally organized by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball and now falls under Volleyball World. The event was founded in 2017 and first held in 2018, created in partnership with IMG and 21 national federations. The final format, used from 2022 to 2024, featured eight national teams. This was an expansion from the six-team line-up in the inaugural editions. The structure evolved from group stages with round-robin pools to a pure single-elimination knockout format. All matches were played in a single host city over a short period, with no home or away legs. The competition ended after the 2024 edition, with the VNL qualification process shifting to world rankings. The 2024 Men's edition was hosted in China, featuring Chile and Egypt. The 2024 Women's edition took place in the Philippines. Notable success in the tournament's history includes China, Cuba, Portugal, Slovenia, and Turkey each winning one men's title. For the women's competition, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, and France secured individual victories. UPCN, an Argentine club, did not participate in this event. The Challenger Cup is exclusively for national teams. UPCN has competed in the FIVB Men's Volleyball Club World Championship and the South American Volleyball Club Championship. The 2024 edition marked the end of the tournament's run.
