The main hall of the Cairo Stadium Indoor Halls Complex in Nasr City holds 16,900 people. Egypt's volleyball players train in the shadow of a federation that came together in 1949, when delegates from fourteen clubs met at the YMCA headquarters in Cairo; that gathering predates the country's first appearance at an African Championship by more than two decades, and the team did not reach a World Championship until 1974.
What followed on the continent has had little competition. Nine African Nations Volleyball Championship titles, the most recent in 2023, sit alongside six gold medals at the African Games stretching back to 1965. Tunisia has pushed hardest against that record over the years, with Algeria also capable of unsettling the Pharaohs. Against the rest of the world the story reads differently: a ninth-place finish at the 2016 Olympics and thirteenth at the 2010 World Championship mark the ceiling so far.
Ahmed Salah carried much of that African dominance on his own shoulders, winning the continental title seven times before retiring in 2023 and taking MVP honours often enough that his name became shorthand for the position. Marco Bonitta now coaches a squad captained by Hossam Abdalla, built almost entirely from two clubs, Al Ahly and Zamalek, whose rivalry supplies the players who then have to set it aside once they pull on red, white and black together.
They still return to Nasr City for the games that matter, to a hall built for exactly this kind of crowd.
