Rwanda go into the current African cycle as one of the more competitive sides in Zone V: the men's team finished ninth at the 2023 African Volleyball Championship, following sixth-place finishes in 2017 and 2021, the latter earned on home sand in Kigali.

The squad draws almost entirely from APR VC, the club that has dominated the domestic league, and that concentration shows both in how quickly the players read each other and in how thin the depth runs behind them. Captain Wicklif Dusenge anchors the attack from the opposite position, with Yves Mutabazi sharing that load and Paul Akan directing play from setter.

The team's high point came under Paul Bitok, the Kenyan coach who took charge in 2010 and spent nearly a decade shaping the programme, guiding Rwanda to fourth place at the All-Africa Games in both 2011 and 2015. Zone V rivalries have sharpened around Uganda, and qualifiers between the two are treated as derby duels regardless of the wider standings. Rwandan volleyball has also produced success away from the main indoor game: the sitting volleyball team took gold in the women's category at the 2017 ParaVolley Africa Championships.

Home games are played at the BK Arena in Kigali's Remera district, a 10,000-seat venue that stands as the largest indoor arena in East Africa and gave the federation the stage to host the 2021 championship on its own ground.
