Tunisia is the name that keeps coming back whenever Cameroon's men reach an African Championship final. Most recently in 2021, when Tunisia won 3-1, and, further back, in 2001, when the result ran the other way and Cameroon lifted the title.

That 2001 win sits alongside 1989 as one of two African Championship titles for the Indomitable Lions, the nickname the volleyball team shares with Cameroon's footballers. The 1989 final went five sets against Algeria before Cameroon closed it out 3-2, and that same year the team also made its first appearance at the FIVB World Cup, finishing eighth — still its best showing at that event. Five runner-up finishes and five bronze medals since then point to a team that is almost always in the closing rounds without always taking the trophy.

The African Games have been kinder: four gold medals, the most recent in 2019, against two silvers. Guy-Roger Nanga took charge of the side in 2022, following Blaise Mayam Re Niof, who had led the team in 2018.

Cameroon plays in green, red and yellow, the colours of the national flag, and its home matches at the Yaoundé Multipurpose Sports Complex draw into a hall holding just over 5,000. The federation behind the team, FECAVOLLEY, joined the International Volleyball Federation in 1964, decades before the side made its first recorded African Championship appearance, in 1971.
