For as long as Central African Republic has entered Zone 4 of the African volleyball confederation, Cameroon has been the team in the way. It is the region's dominant side and the one everybody else measures themselves against. So in June 2026, when the men's team from Bangui won the CAVB Zone 4 qualifiers, the result that counted was the win over Cameroon. The African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) runs the zone. Until then the team had not reached any major tournament, and the win took them into the group stage of the African Nations Championship for the first time.

The draw for Tunisia then put the two sides together again. Pool D held Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cameroon, so the team from Bangui went to the tournament with the same opponent waiting in its group. The campaign opened on 15 September 2026 against Rwanda and went badly: 0–3, with sets of 25–14, 25–9 and 25–14. Nothing in that scoreline reflects the qualifying run that got them there.

The side is known as Les Fauves de Bas-Oubangui, a name that goes back to the region around the Oubangui river. It has no arena of its own. Matches in Bangui have been played in borrowed halls, among them the Maison de jeunes des Castors.

The Fédération Centrafricaine de Volley-Ball, led today by Dr Paul Crescent Beninga, was founded in 1964. It joined the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) the same year. That was 62 years before this team first qualified for a continental group stage.
