Egypt is the name that stops the conversation whenever the Wafalme Stars talk about their ceiling. It was Egypt who beat them in the final of the 2024 African Games, and it was Egypt again in the final of the 2026 Women's African Nations Championship. Tunisia sits just below that rivalry in the region's pecking order, but it is the Egyptian matches that Nairobi circles.

The federation behind the team, the Kenya Volleyball Federation, was set up in 1962 under a different name, joined the FIVB two years later and came under the National Olympic Committee of Kenya in 1975. None of that paperwork explains why the team is still waiting on its first Olympic appearance or a World Championship berth; at the continental level its results have circled the middle of the table for decades, fifth in 2007, ninth-place finishes in 2021 and 2023.

The 2024 silver, then, reads less like a breakthrough and more like a correction. Outside hitter Nicholas Matui was named MVP of the CAVB Zone Five qualifiers this year, and under head coach Gideon Tarus the Wafalme Stars won every match in that Ugandan qualifying round to book their place at the 2026 African Nations Championship.

Home games are played in front of no more than 5,000 people at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, part of the Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi.
