Algiers hosts the sport more as an administrative centre than a footballing rival to it — the national volleyball team trains and plays across the capital's halls, most often the Palais des Sports d'Alger, occasionally travelling to Oran's Palais des Sports Hamou Boutlelis when the schedule calls for it. There is no single arena to call home, which matters less for a national side than the federation behind it: the Fédération algérienne de volley-ball, formed on 8 December 1962.

The green and white shirt, with touches of red, gave the team its nickname, Al-Khodra — the Greens — a direct echo of the national flag. That kit has been on court for the country's best decade in the sport: African Championship titles in 1991 and 1993, Arab Championship titles in 1994 and 1998, and continental gold at the 1991 and 2015 African Games.

Tunisia has been the fixture that defines the calendar more than any tournament final, the Maghreb rivalry giving ordinary qualifiers an edge results alone would not explain.

Kamel Imeloul now runs the side that carried the 2025 World Championship squad, a roster built around setter Abderaouf Hamimes threading the offence and outside hitter Yasser Amrat among those trusted to finish it.
