The men's team met Cameroon in the 2001 African Championship final in Port Harcourt and came away with silver, the closest it has come to a continental title. The women's side finished ahead of Nigeria in the 1993 championship and lost to them in the final that mattered most: the 2003 All-Africa Games in Abuja, where Nigeria won 3–2 for gold on home ground.

That women's team, built around Venes Aya, Sheila Athekame, Esther Dusu, Dorothy Egbum, Priscilla Agera and Albertina Francis, has carried the programme's best results. Between 1995 and 2005 it took the African Championship final four times without winning it, adding two bronze medals along the way, in 1993 behind Kenya and Egypt and in 1999 behind Tunisia and Cameroon. The gold at the 2003 Games sits apart from that run of silvers as the one occasion Nigeria finished top of the podium rather than just short of it.

More recently the women's side, coached by Samuel Ajayi, placed sixth at the 2023 African Championship, while the men have been captained by Abdulquadri Jaiyeola with Bruno Ibeh and Adeniyi Favour among the squad's regulars.

Both national sides answer to the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, run out of the Indoor Sports Hall at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja since the federation's founding in 1972. The hall seats 3,000.
