«Les Sao»
The Fédération Tchadienne de Volley-Ball has run the game since 1964, the year it joined the FIVB, and its president, General Idriss Dokony Adiker, also sits as vice-president of the African Volleyball Confederation. Coaching duties fell to Assam Samir, brought in from Algeria under the FIVB's Volleyball Empowerment programme, and under him six Chadian players moved into professional contracts abroad.
Among those exports, Bankane Assan Paulin and Ndoubahidi Martial both play their club volleyball for Castel Batna in Algeria, while Ngaryar Moussa Djitayna signed in Libya with Zliten.
Their two clearest recent runs came in 2023: a Round of 16 finish at the African Nations Championship, where they beat Mali 3-0 before losing to Tunisia and Tanzania, and a quarter-final at the African Games, reached after edging Gambia 3-2 in the group stage and settling for third behind Kenya and Ghana. Cameroon ended that run 3-1 in the last eight. Further back, the 2017 African Championship had closed for them in 12th place.
Six Sao now earning a living from volleyball outside Chad.
