Mohamed Al Hachdadi was named MVP of the 2021 African Championship.
The Moroccan Royal Volleyball Federation has run the national team since 1955. Morocco reached the podium at the African Championship in 1976, then went nearly three decades before matching it in 2009, when a defeat to Cameroon in the bronze match still left them third. The clearest measure of how that rivalry cuts both ways came in 2015, when Morocco lost the final to Egypt but beat Algeria to take bronze anyway.
Results since have settled into a middling pattern — sixth place in 2011 and 2019, seventh in 2017, fifth in 2023 — the kind of finishes that keep a team in continental contention without threatening the top two. Zouheir El Graoui has been part of that generation's better moments, picked out as best receiver in 2021 on the same run that brought Al Hachdadi his MVP award, and he has also carried the Atlas Lions name onto the beach volleyball court at Olympic level. It is Al Hachdadi, though, whose name still comes up first when the team's better days are discussed.
