The Stade des Martyrs holds 80,000 and sits in Kinshasa, and it is where the Léopards train as well as play.

The Fédération de Volleyball du Congo, which runs the national side, dates to 1964, the year it also joined the FIVB. Since then the Léopards have built a record without ever reaching a podium: sixth at the African Men's Volleyball Championship in 1993 and again in 2003, seventh in 2005, eighth in each of the last three editions they entered — 2017, 2019 and 2021. A ninth-place finish at the All-Africa Games in 2007 sits in the same bracket.

What sharpens that record is Cameroon. The two sides have played what is known in Central Africa as a derby with no love lost, and for 27 years the result went one way. That ended in a 2025 qualifier, when the Léopards finally beat Cameroon again — a single result, but one that undid nearly three decades of losing.

Danny Sapalo took charge as head coach with that history behind him: a federation older than most of its rivals in the region, a stadium too big for the sport it hosts, and a Cameroon fixture that had just stopped being automatic.
