About

The volleyball competition at the Southeast Asian Games functions as a tournament within a biennial multi-sport event rather than a standing league. Organised by the Southeast Asian Games Federation and the host nation’s committee, the event gathers national teams from ASEAN member states every two years. Participation relies on the recognition of national federations, with no system of promotion or relegation.

The format for the 2025 edition split into Men’s and Women’s Indoor Volleyball alongside Beach Volleyball. Each indoor competition featured seven teams divided into two pools of varying sizes. The top two sides from each pool progressed to semi-finals in a knockout stage. This structure provides a clear pathway to medals without the complexity of a round-robin league.

Thailand has established itself as the dominant force, particularly in women’s indoor volleyball where they claimed thirteen consecutive gold medals between 1995 and 2023. They extended this success in 2025, securing titles in both men’s and women’s indoor categories. Indonesia challenged this hegemony in the men’s final, ending Thailand’s three-year streak in that specific event. The Philippines also made an impact in beach volleyball, breaking a long Thai dominance in the women’s category during the same year.

Traditional powerhouses include Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. The event differs from larger regional contests like the Asian Games due to its narrower geographic scope. It serves as a benchmark for the regional hierarchy but does not act as an official qualifier for Olympic or Asian Games tournaments. The competition remains a key preparatory stage for athletes aiming for broader Asian-level success.
