The nearest the Philippines have come to a Southeast Asian Games gold was in 2019, when they reached the volleyball final at home in Pasig and lost it to Indonesia. It was their second silver, 42 years after the first in Kuala Lumpur in 1977. Head coach Dante Alinsunurin had built that side around the scoring trio known as "BAE": Marck Espejo, Bryan Bagunas and Ranran Abdilla. Espejo won the UAAP most valuable player award five times and Bagunas twice.

In the standard six-a-side format they finished fourth in 1958, and their best Asian Championship placing is fifth, in 1975. The country's link to the game is older than any of these results. The 1913 Far Eastern Championship Games in Manila staged the first international volleyball tournament.

It ended only in January 2021, when an election created the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF). Under the new body the team, known as Alas Pilipinas after its earlier name Bagwis, returned to the SEA Games podium with bronze in 2025. Before that, in 2025, it played its first FIVB World Championship. The Philippines were hosts, and the games were played at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, which seats around 15,000 for sport. They finished 19th.

Japan sit above both of them as the dominant power in Asia.
