South Korea and Japan sit above Chinese Taipei in nearly every Asian tournament that matters, and it is against those two that the men's national team measures itself. The gap shows up in the record: three bronze medals at the Asian Games, in 1970, 1998 and 2018, but nothing higher, and a best finish of fourth at the Asian Men's Volleyball Championship, reached in 1983, 1997 and 2021. The 1998 bronze came at Japan's own expense, a 3-2 win.

Where Chinese Taipei has managed to finish on top is the East Asian Championship, won once, in 2013. Everywhere else in that competition the team has settled for silver, runner-up seven times between 2006 and 2025.

The side plays under the Chinese Taipei Olympic flag rather than a national one, and its blue and white colours are drawn from that flag's Blue Sky, White Sun design rather than from any club tradition. The Chinese Taipei Volleyball Association, which runs the team, was founded on 28 December 1954.

Matches are usually played at the Taipei Gymnasium in the city's Songshan District, a modest hall holding around 2,300 spectators, though the bigger occasions have been shifted to the 7,000-seat Taipei Heping Basketball Gymnasium.
