Dragan Mihailović had already coached India once before the Volleyball Federation of India brought him back in May 2019, and the second spell has delivered silver at the 2025 CAVA Men's Volleyball Nations League and, months later, bronze at the AVC Men's Volleyball Cup in Ahmedabad, where India beat Bahrain 3-1.

The federation behind him dates to 1951, formed at a meeting in Ludhiana before its offices settled in Chennai. India has no single home ground; the national side rotates between the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Delhi and the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bangalore.

Its best results at the Asian Games belong to an older era. Bronze came in Tokyo in 1958, then silver in Jakarta in 1962, lost to Japan 15-12 in a decisive fifth set. Cyril Valloor, coaching with Udayakumar as his captain, brought back another bronze from Seoul in 1986.

The Pakistan fixture is still called the "mother of all battles" in India, and the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou showed why the region matters more than any trophy cabinet: India beat three-time champions South Korea 3-2 to top their pool, then lost 3-0 to Pakistan in the 5th-6th classification match days later.
