The men's national team comes out of an association that began as a Kowloon body. In 1951 the Volleyball Association of Hong Kong, China (VBAHK) was set up as the Kowloon Volleyball Association, and it still runs the national side. It later joined the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) and the sport's world federation.

The team has no ground of its own. It plays wherever the tournament is staged, most often at the Yuen Chau Kok Sports Centre or the Po Wing Road Sports Centre.

The results are those of a side that competes for places in the middle of the table. The Asian Championship has never taken Hong Kong past 10th place, reached in 1983. At the Asian Games the best finish is 7th, in 1990, and in 2023 the team came 9th. The AVC Cup gave a better recent moment: 6th in 2018, then 11th when the tournament came round again in 2023. Yau Hok Chun coached through several of these campaigns, including the Asian Championships of 2017 and 2021. Dragan Mihailovic, a Serbian, took charge for the 2022 AVC Cup.

Players are mostly drawn from home clubs such as Dragon Volleyball Club and South China AA, and a few names outlast their playing days. Siu Cheong Hung captained the team over a long stretch. Setter Henry Chan played for Hong Kong from 2014 to 2016 and earned his living in Thailand. Ian Chan, another former national team member, later joined the Cantopop boyband MIRROR.

No fixture in the calendar carries a rivalry or a derby label. The matches that matter most to the squad are the continental ones, where the opposition changes with each draw.
