The Korea Volleyball Association came together in March 1946 to run the sport at national level, and a men's team followed to represent it on court. That team waited nearly two decades for its first Olympic appearance, arriving at the Games in 1964, and has carried the federation's colours in Asian competition ever since.

Japan has been the fixture that matters most, the volleyball strand of a rivalry between the two countries that runs across sports and gives every meeting an edge regardless of the standings. Against that backdrop South Korea built a run through the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s that still defines the team: four Asian Championship titles, taken in 1989, 1993, 2001 and 2003, alongside Asian Games golds in 1978, 2002 and 2006. Shin Chi-yong was on the bench for the 2002 gold and stayed involved long enough to take bronze at the 2010 Asian Games as well.

Beyond Asia the record thins. A fourth-place finish at the 1978 World Championship remains the team's high point on the global stage, and a third-place run at the FIVB Challenger Cup in 2022 was the most recent sign of the side pushing past its regional ceiling. The kit has stayed close to home throughout: white, red and black drawn from the Taegeukgi and traditional Korean patterns, worn under Puma since 2022. Unlike the women's side, known to their own supporters as the Red Devils, the men have never settled on a nickname, playing simply as the national team.
