«Tim Garuda»
Southeast Asia is where Indonesia's volleyball team wins. It has taken 12 gold medals at the SEA Games, and the three most recent came in 2019, 2021 and 2023, one after another. Rivan Nurmulki, the opposite hitter, was named most valuable player of the 2019 tournament. Jasen Natanael Kilanta, a setter, was in the squad that won in 2023.
Outside the region the results look different. The team, known as Tim Garuda or Tim Merah Putih for its red and white kit, made its international debut at the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta and finished fourth. That remains its best Asian Games result. At the Asian Championship, fourth place in 2017 is the highest finish.
Under Jeff Jiang Jie, Indonesia took silver at the 2025 SEA Games. Reidel Toiran took over as head coach around the turn of the year, and within months the team won the inaugural AVC Cup in 2026. Alongside it sit three titles in the SEA V Cup, in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
The squad trains and plays at the Padepokan Voli Jenderal Kunarto in Sentul, Bogor, also called GOR Sentul. It is a training centre first and holds about 1,000 spectators. The Indonesian Volleyball Federation, founded on 22 January 1955, runs the national programme.
Twelve SEA Games golds sit against a single fourth place at the Asian Games.
