Meistriliiga: Kuressaare and Vaprus Share Points in Penalty-Heavy Draw
Kuressaare and Vaprus played out a 2:2 draw in the Meistriliiga on Saturday, a result that keeps both clubs within touching distance of each other in the table. Kuressaare, sitting ninth with 24 points from 24 games, held on against seventh-placed Vaprus who arrive with 27 points from 23 matches. The home side had lost three of their last five league outings, including a 0:1 defeat to Tammeka, before finding form again against a visitor who had dropped points in consecutive fixtures.
The opening goal came in the 24th minute when Sander Kapper found the net for the hosts. Matthias Limberg pulled one back for Vaprus in the 74th minute, and the visitors had a chance to take all three points before Demidov was substituted in the 81st minute.
Kuressaare made four changes across the match, Jakob Sten Viidas coming on at half-time and Aston Visse returning to action in the 64th minute. Vaprus also reshuffled, bringing on Deivid Andreas alongside Demidov's replacement in the final quarter of the game. The second half saw both sides pressing for a winner, but neither could find the crucial edge. The match was decided by penalties, and the three-try conversion rate from the spot proved decisive.
Statistically the match was even, with Kuressaare registering 107 attacks against 104 for Vaprus. The hosts had more possession at 44 per cent but took more shots, 21 compared to Vaprus's eight. Kuressaare were more clinical, nine shots on target producing two goals, while Vaprus hit the target twice and scored once. The visitors had more corners, six to four, but the extra pressure did not translate into a breakthrough.
The result means Kuressaare remain nine points adrift of Vaprus with one game in hand, though the gap could tighten if the visitors drop points elsewhere. Vaprus now have a chance to close the distance on the teams above them, while Kuressaare will see this as a chance to build momentum after a run that included defeats to Tammeka and Paiide. The table goes out of the window in these games, and both sides will know that consistency matters more than any single result.
