Neuchâtel Xamax came to Stade Nyonnais and took all three points in the Challenge League, winning 3:1 on Friday evening. The visitors had been winless in five and needed the points badly, while the hosts sat bottom with just two from seven games. By then the match had already turned into a lesson in efficiency.
E. Abedini gave the home side the lead in the thirty-first minute, but L. Bergsma's own goal thirty-three minutes in levelled things up. The home crowd thought they had a second before Abedini was substituted forty minutes in, but the replay showed otherwise. And here's the thing—Nyonnais had the ball more but not the edge.
Xamax came out after the break with a different look about them. Three changes at sixty-one minutes did not shift the momentum, and Mandaka came on sixty-four minutes later in a futile attempt to add something. The visitors then pinned them back, and Ambrose struck twice, first in the seventy-second minute and again eighty-four minutes in.
To be fair, the statistics tell a familiar story. Nyonnais held 51 per cent possession and completed 447 passes, but only created one big chance. Xamax had 49 per cent, made fewer passes, and created two. Their shots were more accurate—42 per cent against 33 per cent—and that is what matters when you are chasing a result.
The home side dug in until the end, with Ribeiro picking up a yellow card in the eighty-ninth minute, but there was nothing more to come. Nyonnais remain winless in eight, while Xamax move to nine points and seventh place.
