TPV and SalPa shared the points in a Group Stage encounter in the Finnish Ykkönen on Monday evening, ending 1-1 at the final whistle. The result leaves both sides where they were before, with SalPa remaining third on 36 points and TPV staying ninth on 24.
M. Akbal gave the hosts the lead in the first half, scoring in the 40th minute after a period where TPV looked more dangerous than the statistics would suggest. To be fair, the visitors had the majority of possession but struggled to convert their control into clear chances.
The second half brought a flurry of changes from both managers. SalPa brought on E. Rrustemi and N. Jokiniemi together in the 63rd minute, looking for something different. TPV responded with three substitutions of their own, bringing on R. Kostiainen, M. Akbal himself, and Y. Miyazaki in quick succession.
O. Jakonen pulled SalPa level in the 81st minute, and by then the game had opened up considerably. Tension flared in the closing stages, with J. Venemies and T. Toijala both picking up yellow cards before Toijala was substituted in stoppage time.
The statistics tell you everything and nothing. SalPa dominated possession at 61 per cent and launched 124 attacks, yet managed only four shots on target. TPV, with 39 per cent of the ball, were more efficient with their 11 corners and three shots on target.
It was a draw that suited neither side entirely. SalPa could have taken all three points with more clinical finishing, while TPV showed they are not the easy option that their position in the table might imply. The gap between them remains 12 points, and that is what matters most.
