VLI defeated Amager 2 3-1 on Sunday in the 1. Division East, taking three sets to one in a match that gave the home side their first win of the campaign. The result lifted VLI off the bottom of the table while Amager 2 remained rooted in ninth place after losing again.
The home side had dropped their previous meeting in April when Amager 2 won 3-1, but this time the tables were turned. VLI held their nerve after the opening set and gradually pulled away as Amager 2's confidence looked to have faded since their heavy defeat to Rødovre earlier in the week.
Both sides arrived having lost their opening matches, so there was something at stake beyond pride. VLI's single point from their previous game came courtesy of a draw elsewhere, while Amager 2 carried zero points and a reputation for struggling against the stronger sides in this division.
By then, the prediction that VLI would come out on top was no surprise. The confidence figure of 71 per cent felt justified — the home side had the momentum and the recent head-to-head record, even if that was against a different opponent at a different time of year.
The result means VLI are now level on points with several sides above them, while Amager 2's winless run stretches to two matches. They have not won since April and the pressure will only grow as the season progresses.
What stands out is how quickly the match settled after VLI found their rhythm. They changed shape at the break and let the game flow rather than trying to force issues. Amager 2, meanwhile, seemed to run out of games as their options narrowed.
