About the player
On 3 May 2026, Varaždin's goalkeeper looked down the pitch at his own brother. Josip Silić started against HNK Hajduk Split; Toni Silić started for Hajduk. It was the first time in the history of the Croatian First Football League that two brothers began a match as the goalkeepers for opposing sides. Hajduk won it 3-1.
Goalkeeping runs in the family — the brothers are sons of Damir Silić, himself a former goalkeeper. Josip came up through the youth system at NK Dugopolje, with a season at NK Adriatic Split in between, and joined the Dugopolje senior squad in July 2017. The wait for a first-team debut was long: it came on 18 May 2019, in a Druga HNL match against Lučko.
Dugopolje is where the bulk of his career sits. Between 2017 and the start of 2023 he made around 30 senior appearances there, across the second tier and the 1. NL, before leaving for Varaždin on a free transfer on 15 February 2023. The contract runs until 31 May 2028.
Since the move he has been used sparingly. Thirteen league appearances have come across the 2023/24, 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons, along with four matches in the Croatian Cup and two in the UEFA Conference League.
