The one trophy in the cabinet came in 1993, when the club still played as Varteks : the DCM Trophy. What followed was a long run of near-misses — six Croatian Cup finals between 1995-96 and 2010-11, none of them won, plus a Yugoslav Cup final lost back in 1960-61. Varaždin turned up for the big day more often than most and never got over the line.
That club is gone. Founded in 1931 as Slavija, renamed Tekstilac and then Varteks in 1958, it took the city's own name in 2010 and was wound up in 2015. Supporters and officials had already moved: on 1 July 2012 they registered a new NK Varaždin and started again in the lower divisions, keeping the red and white.
It took seven years to reach the top. Promotion to the 1. HNL arrived for 2019-20, the first season in the first division for the phoenix club; relegation followed in 2020-21, and the side came straight back up in 2022. Nothing has been won at that level yet.
Home is the Stadion Varteks, which the city also knows as the Stadion Anđelko Herjavec, and which holds 8,818.
