About the player
Raphaël Merkies was born in Paris but built his career in Hong Kong, where he moved at the age of 14 to attend the French International School. He joined the Hong Kong FC youth system that year and was promoted to the senior side in 2022, before a free transfer took him to Southern District FC in 2023, where he won the Hong Kong Sapling Cup.
In February 2025 Merkies signed for Shandong Taishan on a free transfer once his Southern District contract had expired.
His international career followed a similar trajectory. Merkies made his debut for Hong Kong on 19 March 2025 in a friendly against Macau, and by June 2026 had earned 10 caps and scored 5 goals for the national team. Among those, a hat-trick against Bangladesh in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup third-round qualifiers on 9 October 2025 stands out, along with a goal against Fiji at the 2025 King's Cup.
Merkies plays with his right foot and has moved from Hong Kong's domestic league to a starting role in the Chinese Super League.
